Forget vacations, it's all about staycations
Monday, June 29, 2009
With the recession going on right now and gas prices soaring, more and more people are looking towards staycations this summer rather than going on expensive vacations. For those of you that don't know, a staycation is "a vacation in which the vacationer stays at home, or near home, while creating the environment of a traditional vacation". According to Tightwad Tod, his top things to do on a staycation are:
- Sunset cruises on lakes (usually with dinner)
- Wine-tasting and winery tours
- Community theater and touring Broadway productions
- Historic home tours
- Concerts
- Ski-lift rides in off season
- Staying at a local resort or hotel for a few days
- In-town Bed and Breakfasts
- Behind-the-scenes tours such as television stations, radio stations, and newspaper production facilities
- Museums, observatories, planetariums
- Scenic train rides (ranging from about 30 minutes long to day trips)
- Water parks
- Zoos and aquariums
- Sporting events (as well as stadium tours)
- Camping (as well as hiking, biking, wilderness viewing areas, state parks)
- Amusement parks
- City festivals
So grab your bf/husband/fiance/friends/family and plan your next summer staycation. Have fun without spending a ton!

My boyfriend and I did a "Staycation" this past memorial day to save money --we have it easy though living in Orlando we were able to go to the river on our friend's boat, come back and go to Disney/Universal with our annual passes.

Well we keep getting told to discover our own countries. That first pic looks great. I'm afraid I'd be too lazy if I got time off work and had no travel plans

Loving the idea of staycations right now! I was on this weekend trip kick for a while, but I'm so exhausted after two consecutive two weekends away. New York is a place where most people TAKE vacations. All in favor of staycationing at home :D

I couldn't agree more. Aww, sailing. I just went to San Fran a couple of weekends ago and had the best time! It really is economical to go this route since it saves money but you are still putting activities around you to good use. What a wise and fun post darlin!
